Teaching Practice

This portion is a reflective exploration of teaching practice based on reports of two-week practice teaching in a foreign language classroom at Valaya Alongkorn Rajabhat University's Demonstration School. The focus here is on teaching procedures, time management, organizing activities, classroom management, and problem-solving during this immersive experience.

Procedures of Teaching

Teaching practice encompasses a multitude of procedures aimed at facilitating effective learning. Over the course of the observations, these procedures have been evident in various forms.

  • Engaging Warm-Ups: Each day began with a warm-up activity, designed to gauge students' emotions and create a comfortable, receptive environment. In Grade 9/5, a warm-up using memes allowed students to express their feelings creatively. This simple yet effective activity not only broke the ice but also provided a platform for students to share their emotions and create connections. It set a positive tone for the class, fostering a welcoming atmosphere.

  • Interactive Activities: The teaching sessions integrated interactive elements to foster participation and engagement. In Grade 12/2, an interactive Quizziz activity with a leaderboard added a competitive layer to the learning process. The use of technology, such as Quizziz, served as an innovative tool to actively involve students. The competition aspect added excitement and motivation, resulting in increased participation. This not only made learning enjoyable but also provided a means for students to test their knowledge and learn from their peers.

Time Management and Organizing Activities

Effective Time Usage: Time management was a crucial aspect of these teaching sessions, ensuring that the planned activities fit within the allotted time frame. The use of technology, such as the Quizziz platform, facilitated efficient activity management. In Grade 12/2, the well-structured time management allowed for a seamless transition between activities, keeping students engaged throughout the session. The use of technology ensured that activities were organized efficiently, preventing any disruptions and allowing for a productive class.

Seamless Transitions: Transitions between activities were smooth, maintaining student engagement. The practice teaching in Grade 9/5 featured a dynamic flow, transitioning from a warm-up to interactive activities and discussions with ease. This approach ensured that students were actively involved in various activities without experiencing interruptions or downtime. The smooth transitions allowed for a continuous learning experience, making the most of the limited class time.

  • Creating a Positive Atmosphere: Establishing a positive and engaging classroom atmosphere was a common thread. Warm-up activities, use of technology, and real-life examples contributed to this ambiance. In Grade 12/2, for instance, the use of warm-up activities and the integration of Filipino words not only set a positive tone but also bridged cultural gaps. This approach demonstrated an adept ability to create a welcoming and inclusive classroom environment, fostering a sense of belonging among students.

  • Engaging Students: Student engagement was a priority in every session. In Grade 9/6, Teacher Train's interactive approach and dynamic discussions fostered a participatory ambiance. The classroom was alive with energy, as students actively contributed to the discussion. The interactive approach piqued their interest and encouraged them to express their thoughts and ideas. This level of engagement is a testament to effective classroom management, as it keeps students invested in the learning process.

Classroom Management

Problem-Solving While Teaching and Staying in the Designated School

  • Adapting to Technology: Integrating technology was a learning curve. It required problem-solving to ensure that all students could actively participate. In Grade 12/2, challenges were overcome, and students engaged effectively using the Quizziz platform. This demonstrates the importance of adaptability in teaching. When faced with technological challenges, the preservice teacher didn't give up but found a solution to ensure that technology enhanced the learning experience rather than hindered it.

  • Cultural Adaptation: As an external observer, adapting to a new cultural and educational environment was a significant challenge. However, the engagement with Filipino words in Grade 12/2 showcased the ability to bridge cultures and connect with students effectively. This reflects problem-solving in terms of cultural adaptation, creating an inclusive learning environment for students from diverse backgrounds. It demonstrates a teacher's ability to recognize and celebrate cultural diversity within the classroom.
